The World Cup tournament, the epitome of the sport, need an iconic trophy to celebrate the tournament, and signify the magnitude of winning the World Cup. But which trophy has been used to celebrate winning the tournament? Who designed it? Has it changed over time? To answer these questions we have put together a brief history of the cup itself from the inaugural tournament in 1930, to the present day.

The World Cup Trophy is a gold trophy awarded to the winners of the FIFA World Cup association football tournament. Since the appearance of the World Cup in 1930, two trophies have been used: the Jules Rimet Trophy from 1930 to 1970 and the FIFA World Cup Trophy™ from 1974 to the present day.

Jules Rimet, was one of the key person responsible for creating the World Cup tournament, after he the voted to start it in 1929. A year later, the first World Cup look place. Crowning FIFA’s 33-year reign at the pinnacle of the footballing body, Rimet started in 1921 and fought for the creation of the tournament.

Victory

TThe first trophy, originally named Victory, was made of gold plated sterling silver and lapis lazuli. It stood 35 centimeters high and weighed 3.8 kilograms. The trophy was designed by Abel Lafleur and depicts Nike, the Greek Goddess of Victory holding a cup started life known imply as the ‘World Cup’ and would later be nicknamed the Golden Goddess’.

As a result of his rule, the game grew considerably and the Cup was renamed in honor of FIFA president ‘Jules Rimet’ Trophy after the Second World War in 1946.

Uruguay and Italy shared the first four World Cups, followed by West Germany in 1954. Brazil then won three of the next four World Cups, meaning they had in outright under FIFA regulations.

The Second World War had a huge impact on the globe and the trophy was not immune to that. Italy was winners in 1938, but because they was heavily involved in the war, there was concern for the trophy’s well-being. Italian FIFA Vice President Ottorino Barassi decided to secretly take the trophy from the bank in Rome and hide it in a shoe box under his bed to make sure the Nazis did not get it.

The 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden marked the beginning of new trophy tradition. When Brazilian captain ilderaldo Bellini heard request from photographers for a better view of the trophy, he lifted it up in the air. Since then every captain of winning team repeats this gesture.

Amazing

Another significant moment in the history of the Cup took place in 20 March 1966. Four months before the scheduled tournament in England, the trophy was stolen from a public exhibition at Westminster Central Hall. Despite 24-hour security, the theft sparked outrage, and the perpetrators demanded a ransom of £15,000. In response, a replica was made in case it could not be retrieved, and the entire police force were mobilized to find the Cup.

Eventually it was found seven days later, wrapped in a newspaper in South London, by a dog called Pickles.

Dog’s owner Dave Corbett returned the trophy immediately and received £6,000 prize as a reward. The story says Pickles received a lifetime supply of dog food.

As a safety measure, the Football Association secretly produced a replica of the trophy for use in exhibitions. This replica was used on subsequent occasions until 1970, as the original trophy had to be returned to FIFA for the next competition. As FIFA explicitly refused permission to create a replica by FA, the replica also had to disappear from public view and was kept under its creator's bed for many years. This replica was finally auctioned in 1997 for £254,500 and purchased by FIFA.

Talent

USA Today values the real World Cup Trophy trophy at $20 million or around £16 million.

The new trophy has lived a less exciting life than the old one in terms of theft, but there was one close contact in 2010 at the World Cup Final between Spain and the Netherlands. The well-known footballer and trouble-maker Jimmy Jump came out on the pitch wanting to put a Barretina (a Catalan hat) on the Cup. He was quickly caught by security guards and got a small fine.

In 1970, Brazilian team won the tournament for the third time and original trophy was transferred to Rio de Janeiro and was put on display at the Brazilian Football Confederation headquarters in a cabinet, with a front of bullet-proof glass. On 19 December 1983, the wooden back of the cabinet was forced open with a crowbar and the trophy was stolen again. Four men were detained in absentia for the crime, but the trophy was never found. It is believed to have been melted down, sold, or hidden in some private collection.

For the 1974 tournament, a new trophy had to be designed and made. After receiving 53 submissions from sculptors in seven countries, the winning design was selected. Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga won, and the trophy was made in Italy by Stabilimento Artistico Bertoni company. Gazzaniga also designed the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup later.

The image of two people holding the Earth globe, became the World Cup trophy. It was made of five kilograms of 18-karat gold with bands of malachite on its 13 centimeters base. It stands 36.5 centimetres high and weighs 6.1 kilograms, worth approximately US$161,000 in 2018.

It was said that the trophy is hollow; if it was solid, the trophy would weigh 70-80 kilograms and would be too heavy to lift.

Winning teams are engraved on the bottom base layer, and there will be no more space for engravings after the 2038 World Cup. The Cup used to be kept by the winning team until the final draw of the next tournament, however, it is not like that anymore. Instead, the winner now receives a gold-plated bronze replica. The original trophy is permanently housed at the FIFA World Football Museum in Zurich. It will only leave the museum when it goes on its FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour, and it is also present at Final draw for the next World Cup, as well as on the pitch at the World Cup Final.
